After the trial of Rwanda genocide suspects at a U.N court in Tanzania, other small time perpetrators faced communal justice known as Gacaca court . Am not sure whether that should be our case but I know that the western dictated means of justice retribution is inapplicable, incoherent and inappropriate as far as Kenya is concerned. What informs my sense of justice is quite different from what the technocrats at Whitehall or 1600 Pennsylvania street Washington D.C would like to tell me. We have to constantly critique imperialist white supremacist patriarchal culture because it is normalized by mass media and rendered unproblematic. In the emerging world of ethnic conflict and civilizational clash, Western belief in the universality of Western culture suffers three problems: it is false; it is immoral; and it is dangerous. I believe that victims of the 07/08 PEV need justice. However the path taken by Kenyans seemed to be hinged on ” lets punish them” versus ” we are being targeted” mentality. The moral question is where will Kenya be at the end of it all. How will our moral and religious outlook as a nation change? At the end of the day we aim to find out what really happened, punish the perpetrators, warn would be perpetrators and bring closure to victims. Are these achievable at The Hague? I don’t know. Methinks we need much more honest introspection and a national dialogue. Meanwhile lets take time to consider what this moments portend for Kenya’s future. All knowledge that is about human society, and not about the natural world, is historical knowledge, and therefore rests upon judgment and interpretation. This is not to say that facts or data are nonexistent, but that facts get their importance from what is made of them in interpretation for interpretations depend very much on who the interpreter is, who he or she is addressing, what his or her purpose is, at what historical moment the interpretation takes place. Will our conscience be clear at the end of it all? Ours is a world of technology giants and ethical infants.
